Comic by Margreet de Heer

2 pale-skinned women, 1st woman on left with curly orange hair, the other woman “Mia,” on right, dark hair with a large white highlight across it. The women in bed with their white or light tan cat. 1st woman’s bare shoulders visible above blanket; Mia in purple shirt. (Comic has 3 panels across, 4 rows down, then one long final panel the width of three panels).

1st woman (reaches hand up touching blanket over partner): Mia, are you awake?
Mia: Hm-mm…
(Cat sleeps on bed.)

1st woman: I can’t sleep. I keep worrying…
(Mia reaches arm around 1st woman.
Cat at center looks at them.)

1st: I get so scared of the world
sometimes—there’s so much
hate and intolerance…
(Mia hugs 1st woman. Cat at right side of panel looks on.)

1st  woman: And it seems it’s getting
so much worse lately…
(No cat in next few panels).

1st  woman (sits up, arms up in air questioning, breasts showing, looks at Mia):
What if we’re no longer safe?
Because we’re independent women,
because we’re lesbians…?
(Mia looks on.)

1st woman (bent knees to chest, under the blanket, worried look on face):
I have always taken our freedom
for granted—but what if we’re
about to lose it…?
(Mia wraps one arm around her.)

Mia (points to and looks at transparent bottle with something in it): Do you know what this is?
1st woman: Sure! It’s sand from
our first beach walk!
(Cat on bed, face not visible.)

Mia (throws sand from bottle into air): WATCH THIS!
1st woman (looks up at the sand in the air, speechless.
Cat looks up, a small exclamation point above its head.)

(1st woman and cat look down at sand in the bed.)
Mia (smiling, looks down): Now try to get each grain
of sand back into the bottle--
you can’t do it!

Mia, still holding bottle: And it’s the same with freedom
—once it’s out there, it can never
be totally reversed.

Mia (reaches her arms around first woman who looks back at her):
Let’s just keep on loving and living
in freedom as if it’s the most normal
thing in the world…
Because really it is, and
that will never change.
No matter
how crazy
the world
gets.
(Cat on left side of bed, sits, its eyes closed with contentedly.)

Mia: Do you feel a bit reassured now?
1st woman: Yes.
Mia (touches 1st woman’s arm): Do you think you can sleep now?
1st woman (eyes closed, warm expression, her hand on Mia’s neck or top of chest): No, I can’t.
(Cat, eyes closed, snuggles against 1st woman.)

(Last long panel. 1st woman on the left side of the bed, naked, leans a knee on the bed which now has no blanket. She holds a dustpan in her right hand, a small sweeper in her left.)
1st woman: Your peptalks are
really great, Mia…
…But next time maybe try to make it a bit less visual.

(Mia smiles sheepishly on the right side of bed. She hold a vacuum cleaner in her hands. The empty bottle that held the sand is on it’s side on her side of the bed. The cat looking over it’s shoulder at the women, runs out of the right side of the panel above MARGAREETDEHEER.com)
